Big Sur: A New Perspective

For this adventure, we wanted something closer to home—simpler logistics and less time on the road. So, we set our sights on Big Sur, a place we had all driven through countless times on the iconic Highway 1 but had never fully explored beyond the ocean views. This time, we turned our attention to the backcountry on the east side of the highway, trading coastal vistas for rugged trails.

We embarked on a 3-night trip, hiking through Dutra Flat camp and down to San Carpoforo. The trail wasn’t always obvious, and it took a bit of route-finding and intuition to stay on course, but when we arrived, we found the perfect campsite. As luck would have it, we even had an ideal spot to play a few rounds of backcountry bocce ball.

We spent two nights at the camp, taking in the beauty of the wilderness and going on a day hike to explore even further. On the third night, we moved on to Estrella camp, where we soaked in the serenity and our feet in the cold creek water before hiking out the next day. This trip gave us a fresh perspective on a place we thought we knew, reminding us that Big Sur’s magic extends far beyond the coastline.
