Escape to the Giants: A Pandemic Getaway in Sequoia National Monument
Early in the pandemic, the walls were closing in, and Los Boyz needed to break free from the lockdowns and chaos. Our escape? The Sequoia National Monument via the Wishon Trail. This time, Doug’s son Spencer joined our smaller crew for the much-needed adventure. For whatever reason, the trail felt a bit more challenging than expected—maybe it was the months of being cooped up, or maybe the terrain just decided to humble us.
After a few hours of steady hiking, we found the perfect spot to set up basecamp right along the North Fork of the Tule River. It was just what we needed to unwind. But the real highlight of the trip was our day hike into a secluded grove of old-growth sequoias. There’s nothing like walking among those ancient giants without another soul in sight. The sheer size and presence of those trees are awe-inspiring. Along the way, we stumbled upon some old gold mining camps, adding a sense of history to the already eye-opening experience.
Being out there, away from the world, felt like the perfect antidote to the pandemic-induced cabin fever. Hiking among the towering sequoias and soaking in the solitude brought us the relief we were all craving.
